Cato is een redelijk eenzaam meisje: ze heeft geen vrienden, iedereen vindt haar raar (daar is ze dan wel weer trots op), haar moeder is bij haar geboorte overleden en haar vader is geestelijk behoorlijk afwezig. De enige die zich om Cato bekommert is de hinderlijke buurvrouw Cornelia, die het huis van Cato en haar vader schoonhoudt en eten voor ze kookt, en zich verder vooral te veel met Cato bemoeit en aan haar hoofd zeurt. Cato heeft dan ook een grondige hekel aan Cornelia.

Een gezin trekt iedere zomer naar hun vakantiehuis aan zee, dat al vele jaren familiebezit is. We maken alles mee vanuit de naamloze hoofdpersoon: oudste kind van het gezin bestaande uit vader, moeder, hoofdpersoon zelf natuurlijk en zusjes Mattie en Tamsin en als jongste broertje Alex, allemaal tieners. Vanaf de eerste zin ben ik er vanuit gegaan dat de hoofdpersoon een meisje is, maar achteraf kan ik daar eigenlijk geen bewijs voor vinden. Heel knap gedaan van Meg Rosoff. Aan ieder om het zelf te bepalen.
D : een geschiedenis van twee werelden / Michel Faber ; uit het Engels vertaald door Harm Damsma en Niek Miedema
Zo’n zes jaar geleden kwam Het boek van wonderlijke nieuwe dingen van Michel Faber uit en kondigde hij daarbij aan te zullen stoppen met schrijven: de dood van zijn vrouw had zijn inspiratie weggenomen. In 2016 kwam nog wel een bundel met liefdesgedichten uit waarin hij de liefde en de ziekte en dood van zijn vrouw beschrijft. Het was dan ook een grote verrassing dat in 2020 een nieuw boek van hem uitkwam: een kinderboek nota bene.

De boeken die ik voorlees in de bibliotheek, lees ik eerst altijd even op kantoor. Soms zit er een boek tussen waar ik heel hard om moet lachen. Als er een toevallige collega in de buurt is, laat ik haar ongevraagd weten hoe leuk het boek is en waarom. Ook zijn er soms prentenboeken waarvan ik de vertaling zo geweldig vind, dat ik halverwege het boek even op de boekhoek moet spieken om te zien wie de vertaler is. En dan is het altijd Bette Westera of Edward van de Vendel. Dit was zo’n boek: hardop lachen op kantoor, aan collega laten zien, vertaling door Edward van de Vendel.
